Commissioner Robin Simcox visits Birmingham to meet counterterrorism and counter-extremism professionals

Robin Simcox, the Commissioner for Countering Extremism, this week visited Birmingham to meet those who are tackling extremism and learn more about specific local challenges.

Robin met the Prevent team at Birmingham City Council, Prevent Leads and Co-ordinators within West Midlands Police, Birmingham City Council stakeholders and a variety of Civil Society Organisations.

Topics discussed included the role of the Commission, the Independent Review of Prevent, terminology, categorisation of ideologies in Prevent referrals, the most effective forms of forms of engagement, due diligence, disinformation that exists around Prevent, training, and more.

Robin reflected on an insightful day:

“There are significant challenges in Birmingham regarding extremism, community cohesion and more. However, there is also a network of highly competent and dedicated professionals and activists looking to challenge those that sow the seeds of segregation and division. Their dedication is a real source of optimism.

Such efforts can help us make progress in rolling back extremist groups and their narratives.”
